General ContinuingEducation Requirements

All dentists and dental hygienistsare requiredto earn 30 hours of continuing education during theirtwo-year license period.At least ten of thesehoursmust be takenin a live interactive format.In addition,at leasttwenty hours must focusonclinical skills and knowledge that will improve your abilities asa practitioner, whereas theremainingten hours can be volunteer clinicalwork at a charitable event, business operations and practice management classes, ordental association and society meetings.Continuing education hours must be completed by Dec. 31 of odd numbered years for dentists and even numbered years for dental hygienists. CPR certification should also be maintained and does not count toward the 30 hours.(Source 201 KAR 8:532 , Sections9-10 and 562 , Sections5-6)

Recent Graduates

Students who graduate and obtain a dentist or de​ntal hygienistlicenseduring therenewal year(odd numbered years fordentists, even numbered years for hygienists) of the currenttwo-year license cycleare not required to complete additional educationprior to renewal. Students who graduate and obtain a licenseduring thenon-renewal yearare onlyrequired to complete 15 hours of CEprior to renewal. (Source 201 KAR 8:532 , Section 10 and 562 , Sections6)

PrescribingDentists

All dentists authorized to administer and prescribe controlled substances in Kentuckymustobtain threehours of continuing education relatedto KASPER, pain management or addiction disorders prior to renewing their license.These maybe included in the 30 required hours and are not additional hours. What is KASPER?Kentucky All Schedule Prescription Electronic Reporting (KASPER) is the Commonwealth'sprescription monitoring program designed to assist practitioners and pharmacists with patient care. It is also an investigative tool forlaw enforcement and regulatory agencies.Dentists authorized to administer and prescribe controlled substances in Kentucky must have a KASPER account. Sedation/Anesthesia Permit Holders

Like dental licenses, sedation permits in Kentucky must be renewed by Dec. 31 of everyodd numbered year.On top of the30 hours of CE neededforlicense renewal, ModerateSedation and Deep Sedation/General Anesthesiapermit holders must alsocompleteat least four hours of clinical continuing education related to sedation or anesthesia in a classroom setting during the two year term of the permit. Further, certification inACLS (for adult sedation) and/or PALS (for pediatric sedation) must be maintained.(Source: 201 KAR 8:550 , Section 8)

Attn: Pediatric, Enteral, andParenteral Sedation Holders -In July 2020, the Minimal Pediatric Sedation permit as well as theModerate Pediatric, Enteral, and Parenteral Sedation permits were alldiscontinued in favor of a single Moderate Sedation category. These permits wereactiv euntil Dec. 31, 2021, at which time they wereaffected as follows:

  • Minimal Pediatric Sedation– A permit is no longer required to administer minimal sedation of any kind. Therefore, the Minimal Pediatric Sedation permit has been discontinued. If you held this permit, it simplyexpired on Dec. 31, 2021 and no further action is required on your part.
  • Moderate Pediatric, Enteral, and Parenteral Sedation – These permits werediscontinued and merged into a single category. Any suchpermits that were renewed for the 2022-23 cyclewere reassigned to thenewModerate Sedation permit. Please note that this consolidatedcategory has acomprehensive moderate sedation trainingrequirementthat some licensees, particularly EnteralSedation permit holders, may not have fulfilled. In addition,theModerate Sedation permitrequires four hours of continuing education during every two-year renewal cycle.However, those who renewed under this category for the 2022-23 cyclehave agrace period until Dec. 31,2023to complete the comprehensivetrainingif they have not already done so.
  • Deep Sedation andGeneral Anesthesia– This permit type is un​changed and the renewal process will remain the same except thatyou will identify if the permit is for adult and/or pediatric patients.

Public Health RegisteredHygienists

Dental hygienelicenses, along withany special registrations held by licensees, must be renewed by Dec. 31 of evennumbered years. Most registrations(general supervision, local anesthesia, laser debridement, and IV access lines)do not have their owncontinuing education requirements for renewal. However, public health r​egistered dental hygienists must complete five hours of CE in the area ofpublic health as well as athree hourboard-approvedcourse on medical emergencies (see approvedcorecourses).Both requirements maybe included as part of the30 required hours and are not additional hours. Certificates of Completion

Licensees should obtain a certificate of attendance or completion to document CEhours.If audited, you will be required to submit these documents to the board for review.Certificates should contain the following information:

  • KBD approved course ID Number (only ifa core course that requires approval, see approvedcorecourses​​​)
  • Signature or verification ofthe provider
  • Name of the licensee in attendance
  • Title of the course or meeting
  • Date of attendance or completion
  • N​umber of hours earned
  • Evidence of method of delivery (e.g.if course was taken in a live interactive format)
  • Laser debridement certificates must also include thelaser deviceand wavelength

Q: Do I have to earn 15 hours of CE in each year ofthetwo-year license cycle?
A: No.You only need 30 hours total, which can be completedat any point withinthe two year period.

Q: What kind of CEis considered to be in a"live interactive format"?
A: At least10of your 30 requiredhours of CEmust be in a live interactive presentationformat, which is anyeducational setting where you are participating in a live event that allows you to ask questions and/orinteract with the other participantsin real time.This includes in-personclasses as well as online courses conducted through a live teleconferencing platform like Zoom or Google Meet.

Q: I am licensed in another state but sometimes docharitable work in Kentucky? DoI need to complete CE for that?
A: No. Charitable Limited Licenses issued by theboarddo not have anycontinuing educationrequirementsbut you must still abide by the CErules of your homestate.

Q: What is HB1 and how does it affect my CE requirements?
A: HB1 (or House Bill 1)is alaw passed in 2012 that creates prescribing and dispensing standards aimed at curbing drug abuse in Kentucky. As a result of HB1, prescribing dentistsin the state must complete 3 hours of CE in KASPER, pain management, or addiction disorders during each two-year license cycle.

Q: Do thethreehours of CE in KASPER, pain management, or addiction disorders count towardmy 30 overall hours?
A: Yes.

Q: Does the time spent renewing my CPR certificationcount toward the30 overall hours?
A: No

Q: Does thecourseI took to qualify fora sedation permit alsocount towardthe four hours of CE neededto renew my permit?
A: Yes.But only if the qualifying sedationcourse was taken during the currenttwo-year renewalcycle. In such cases, it would be redundant to requirefour hoursof sedation CEduring the same cycle in which the initial comprehensive training was completed.

Q: As a Public Health Registered DentalHygienist, do my required three hours of CE in medical emergenciesandfive hours of CE inpublic health counttoward the30 overall hours?
A: Yes

Q: Do the four hours of CE required to renew mysedation perm​itcounttoward the30 overall hours to renew my license?
A: No. These are ​separate requirements.

Q: Do I need tocompletemore thanfour hours of CEin sedation/anesthesia if I hold more than onetype ofsedation permit?
A: No. Four hours total is sufficient.

Q: Do dental assistants have CE requirements?
A: No. The Kentucky Board of Dentistry does not issue licenses to dental assistants; therefore, no continuing education is required. However, initial training is required for dental assistants to engage inexpanded duties, includingperformingcoronal polishing, takingradiographs, andadministeringIV lines.
